- How do I send an Interac eTransfer for a booking deposit?
It is simple to do if you use online banking. Instructions are here: Interac eTransfers.
- What additional fees are there? Taxes, Agency Fees, Cleaning Fees?
One advantage of booking a cottage on this site is that the price you see is the price you pay. There are no additional taxes, agency or cleaning fees.
- How can I ensure my activities do not stress the natural environment?
No bathing in the lake. Soaps and shampoos disturb our fragile Eco-system. Use non-toxic cleaning products whenever possible. Also, please choose 1-ply toilet paper.
Never cut down live trees. Many owners provide firewood, and ‘dead fall’ is always in abundance. Firewood bundles can also be purchased at grocery stores.
Be sure to recycle! Landfills (open all week) provide the proper disposal areas for household garbage as well as paper and plastic. A cottage kit or landfill card comes with each cottage to be presented to the attendant with each dump visit.

The septic system is a very sensitive and integral part of cottage life. The basic rule is do not put anything down the toilet besides natural waste and toilet paper. No paper towels, Kleenex, disposable diapers, tampons, pads, etc., Even a toothpick can create havoc. Further, do not pour any grease-like substances down any sink or toilet as this can cause problems.
Stagger water use (ie showers, dishes and laundry should not be undertaken at the same time) to give the system time to replenish.
If you are launching your own boat, please be sure to wash the hull beforehand bringing it back to the cottage. We do not have zebra mussels in this lake and would like to keep it this way.

- Do the cottages supply soap and shampoo?
No, please bring your own.
- What are the arrival and departure times?
· Arrival is Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
· Departure is the following Saturday by 11:00 a.m.
Weekend or midweek bookings (less than one week):
· Arrival is 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (depending on rentals just prior to yours).
· Departure is 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

- What do I do with the garbage?
Garbage left behind is a security deposit issue. Detailed instructions are included in the Cottage Manual as to the disposal of garbage. Never leave food or garbage outside and avoid feeding the wildlife. Even a dirty BBQ grill can attract unwanted guests, such as bears.
- Are there grocery stores nearby? Gas stations? Liquor store?
Grocery : Just 2 minutes down the road in Arichat is http://atlantic.foodland.ca/stores/la-coop-charles-forest/ a nice convenience store called The Co-op Phone: (902) 226-2023 (for essentials like bread, milk etc). - What sort of amenities do you offer for children or infants?
We can arrange for a pack and play (travel cot) if requested, but we ask that you please bring your own specialty items (booster seats, baby monitors, etc).
- Smoking or Pets?
Smoking Outdoors is fine and please use an ashtray, smoking indoors is prohibited.Dogs are only permitted on the property if they are clearly indicated on the booking application form and approved by the owner. The number of pets is restricted to one unless prior approval is obtained from the Cottage Owner. Do not leave your dog tied up or unattended. Pets in a strange place alone can wreck havoc and a barking dog will be reported. Respect your neighbors peace and privacy as they come to vacation for the same reason you do, to escape the noise and chaos of the city! As you would at home, obey the rules of poop & scoop. No traces of dog (pet hair etc) should be evident once you leave. And dogs must be kept off the furniture. No cats please. Bringing or allowing a pet at a no-pets cottage will result in immediate eviction and result in a non-negotiable penalty fee of $350.00 plus HST.
- What sorts of amenities can we expect?
All the small wares one expects in a normal kitchen, i.e. cutlery, wine glasses, serving utensils, pots, pans etc. The bedrooms include freshly cleaned linens and pillows with cases. The bathrooms include fresh bath towels and toilet paper.
- What is your cancellation policy?

- How much is the Damage Deposit and when will I get it back?
The $500 refundable security deposit is banked 30 days prior your arrival. Assuming there are no damages or losses and the cottage is cleaned to its original state, the security deposit payment is fully refundable. The cottage is inspected between guests to ensure the prompt return of your security deposit — approximately 2 weeks from your departure date.
- What is required to confirm a booking?
Please fill out our Reservation Form and let us know which dates you are interested in. We will email you back as soon as possible to let you know if the property is available and ask you if you would like to make a reservation. If so, we will forward our Rental Agreement to you, which outlines our rates, deposits, and cancellation policy. All reservations require a valid credit card for confirmation. The cottage is booked when the damage deposit of $500.00 is received and accepted by the cottage’s owner. Sometimes two deposits arrive the same day for the same time period. Please be aware that bookings can happen very quickly and therefore the first deposit received by the owner for any given period will be given priority.
- How do I book a cottage?
First, take a look through our website at www.theblueheron.ca . We invite you to look through the photographs, read the descriptions, and confirm its availability for the dates you want.
Next, complete either the online or print cottage rental application form and submit it to our office at The Blue Heron 34 Kelson Ave S Grimsby, Ontario L3M4C3. Our experienced staff will contact you by telephone to confirm details and to complete the booking process.
No booking is considered confirmed until your application has been approved and we have received your deposit.
- Do we have to clean the house before we leave?
Upon departure, please ensure that the property is left in the condition you found it. This is the renter’s responsibility. Since you are expected to leave the cottage in good shape – and the cottages are rented clean – this means that you and/or your party must clean the cottage prior to your departure. Cleaning supplies and a cleaning checklist are provided. The cottage checkers will put the finishing touches on our guests’ efforts to ensure that everything ready for the next guests.
- How, when and to whom do I pay for the Rental of The Blue Heron?
The cottage is paid for by Interact e Transfer, cheque, money order or e-transfers are accepted. For out of country guests, we suggest a bank wire to the owner before your vacation.
- How will I get the keys?
You will receive your Welcome package 2- 3 weeks before the beginning of your vacation which includes directions, map, a cottage information sheet and key access (instructions for finding the keys on the property or the lock box number, if applicable).
