Answers to common questions

We’ve compiled a list of answers to common questions.

CONDITION OF PROPERTY

Owners have, to the best of their ability, given an accurate description of the property and its condition. Guest understands that it is considered as reserved “sight unseen”. Our cleaning staff will have cleaned it before your occupancy. All electrical, plumbing and appliances should be in working order. The failures of operation of certain extra amenities, such as TVs, cable, games, or the Internet and WiFi service are not a basis for any refund. Owner will make every effort to have these items repaired but does not guarantee that they will be repaired during Guests occupancy. When you arrive, if you find that the house has not been cleaned to normal standards please notify the Owner immediately. We will do our best to have tradesmen attend to the problems but may not be able to fix everything over holidays and weekends. Under no circumstances will any of the rental money be refunded or returned because of the condition of the house. The Guest agrees to hold the Owner harmless from any liability for the condition of the house. Due to the nature of beach properties, the sand, stairs, decks and concrete are not always stable. Use at your own risk.

HURRICANES & TROPICAL STORMS – There are NO REFUNDS for hurricanes, tropical storms or weather conditions, even if a mandatory evacuation is ordered (optional travel insurance is offered for Renters protection or Renter may obtain through a third party. Renter ASSUMES THE RISK).

WHAT IS THE WILDLIFE LIKE?

Well the first thing you need to know is that the wild life love human food. Here are a few “don’ts” to help you be safe and keep the critters outside:

  • Do not leave garbage outside (ever!). This may attract larger unwanted animals such as Skunks, Raccoons. Trust us, you do not want a Skunk or Racoon visiting you at the Cottage! If you need to store garbage outside, place it in a Garbage container on the resort.
  • Do not leave food out on the kitchen counters or anywhere else in the Cottage. It will attract mice and ants.
  • Do not leave doors open. Chipmunks and squirrels might visit you and mice will view it as an opened invitation.
  • Lights at night will attract moths and other types of flying insects ( Mosquitoes) .

Enjoy the surroundings, the smaller variety of animal life love to scurry around while the larger ones usually keep to themselves. The bugs? Well, they love everybody! It’s all part of being here.

DO I BRING MY OWN BBQ?

No. We will have a Propane BBQ (one tank of propane provided).

How do I send an Interac eTransfer for a booking deposit?

It is simple to do if you use online banking. Instructions are here: Interac eTransfers.

What additional fees are there? Taxes, Agency Fees, Cleaning Fees?

One advantage of booking a cottage on this site is that the price you see is the price you pay. There are no additional taxes, agency or cleaning fees.

HOW CAN I ENSURE MY ACTIVITIES DO NOT STRESS THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT?

No bathing in the lake. Soaps and shampoos disturb our fragile Eco-system. Use non-toxic cleaning products whenever possible. Also, please choose 1-ply toilet paper.

Firewood bundles can also be purchased at the grocery store on Sherkston Shores.

The basic rule is do not put anything down the toilet besides natural waste and toilet paper. No paper towels, Kleenex, disposable diapers, tampons, pads, etc., Even a toothpick can create havoc.  Further, do not pour any grease-like substances down any sink or toilet as this can cause problems.

Your consideration and care is greatly appreciated!

Do the cottages supply soap and shampoo?

No, please bring your own.

MISSING ITEMS

Renters will be charged for any missing items reasonably attributable to Renters and not returned after notification. We perform an inventory/survey of the property after Guests depart of any missing items. Owner will notify guests in the event that items were inadvertently taken, and provide guests the opportunity to return the missing items. Lost keys will incur replacement costs of $25.

WHAT ARE THE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES?

Weekly bookings:

·      Arrival is Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

·      Departure is the following Saturday by 11:00 a.m.

Weekend or midweek bookings (less than one week):

EMERGENCY SERVICES NEARBY?
WHAT DO I DO WITH THE GARBAGE?

Garbage left behind is a security deposit issue. Detailed instructions are included in the Cottage Manual as to the disposal of garbage. Never leave food or garbage outside and avoid feeding the wildlife. Even a dirty BBQ grill can attract unwanted guests, such as bears.

Dogs are only permitted on the property if they are clearly indicated on the booking application form and approved by the owner. Respect your neighbors peace and privacy as they come to vacation for the same reason you do, to escape the noise and chaos of the city! As you would at home, obey the rules of poop & scoop. No traces of dog (pet hair etc) should be evident once you leave. And dogs must be kept off the furniture. No cats please. Bringing or allowing a pet at a no-pets cottage will result in immediate eviction and result in a non-negotiable penalty fee of $350.00 plus HST.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

The following is a list of suggestions to bring with you on your Cottage holiday:

  • Drinking water: Check the Property Information for details. Most Cottages pump water from the lake and filter it. If the water is not drinkable, it will be clearly stated. If you have any concerns, please bring drinking water with you.
  • Linens (Bedroom, Bathroom and Kitchen): You need to bring sheets, pillowcases, sleeping bags, towels, and kitchen linens. (Blankets and pillows are provided unless stated otherwise.)
  • Personal items: Hand soap, shampoo and all other personal hygiene items.
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PDF): If you are planning on going out on the water, every person must have a properly fitted PDF, that you must bring with you.
  • Toilet paper, Kleenex and Paper Towels: There may be some of these items at the Cottage to get you started as renters sometime leave behind, however, you should not count on it and have a supply with you when you arrive.
  • Firewood, fire starters & matches: Most Cottages do not supply these items. If the Cottage has a fire pit for your use, you can purchase firewood, fire starters and matches at local stores and gas stations. Do not transport wood into the area as you may infect this area with tree diseases found in Southern Ontario. Fire regulations are controlled by each municipality.
  • Flashlights: Cottage country is much different from the city when it comes to power outages. Hydro One personnel are quick to respond to issues however if we have severe weather that causes an outage these outages can be lengthy. You should have a flashlight so you can see in the dark when outside the Cottage.
  • Sun Tan Lotion and bug repellent are always handy in Cottage Country!

Please check the Property Information and Amenities for more information.

Do we have to clean the house before we leave?

Upon departure, please ensure that the property is left in the condition you found it. This is the renter’s responsibility. Since you are expected to leave the cottage in good shape – and the cottages are rented clean – this means that you and/or your party must clean the cottage prior to your departure. Cleaning supplies and a cleaning checklist are provided. The cottage checkers will put the finishing touches on our guests’ efforts to ensure that everything ready for the next guests.

HOW DO I GET COTTAGE INFORMATION, DIRECTIONS & KEYS?

As part of the booking process, we will have already sent you the Amenities Checklist and the Property Information. Upon acceptance of your booking we will return the Owner’s Acceptance usually well within 48 hours. It is important that you read the Property Information and any additional notes from the Owner before you get to the Cottage so that you know what to expect.

For advanced bookings, as your vacation comes near, we will check in to see if you have any questions and remind you of due dates for payment of your balance. You can contact us anytime if you have questions.

Once we have received the final payment, we will send you directions usually via Google Maps. In some cases, for our more remote Cottages, we will draw the map ourselves and send it to you as an attachment to the email. Usually there will be a lock box containing the keys and we will send you the code and/or other access instructions two weeks before your vacation. Lost keys will incur replacement costs of $25.
